Youth welfare and development is a critical factor in the growing economy like India. India has taken various efforts at various levels (both national and regional) to promote youth development, health, education, and socio-cultural reformation. Actionable plans have been laid out for skill and all-round development: training to the youth, underprivileged.
Skill Gap Analysis
According to the India Skills Report 2015, it was established that India youth lacks the basic skill and development for employment purpose. Of all the students applying for roles in the labour market, a 30% had the basic skills to match the requirement of employment. Though we have sufficient resources (in terms of community population; people under the working age of less than 35 years) but they are not skilled enough to get a proper job.

Organizations for Youth Skill Development

Unnati
Unnati focuses on youth empowerment for unemployed and economically backward or underprivileged students. This organization helps these youthwith vocational training and education (certification courses) with a job guarantee. The social transformation training and development program is designed for students between 16-25 years. The course is specifically designed for those who lacks the basic amenities, belong to economically backward sections, and underprivileged backgrounds.

Smile Foundation
This organization consists of a group of young corporate professionals who set up the community in 2002 to work on grassroots initiatives for reforming the lives of underprivileged children, families, and youth communities.

Yuva
Yuva is an initiative run by the Delhi Police, which aims to connect the youth by upgrading their skills as per their competencies. Delhi Police has tied up with NSDC for providing mass jobs linked skill training for the selected youth. They work with young people between the age of 17-25 years. They primarily focus on the category of juvenile offenders, school dropouts, crime victims and help them select the skillset according to their interest and qualification.


PanIIT Alumni Foundation
It’s the Nation Building arm of Pan IIT Alumni. This community works towards providing various skill development programmes and educational training to create opportunities for underprivileged youth of the country. The organization essentially focuses on this section as the underprivileged youthis one of the most economically affected groupsin the country, facing challenges to make a living and becoming financially independent. PanIIT’s vocational training program aims to improve the average incomes and livelihoods of the underserved. Their short-term skill training and development models help these youth get placed in reputed blue-collar jobs.
bmSAY Foundation
Founded by a couple, the bmSAY foundation is empowering the underprivileged youth get employment through academic and skill development programs. Their training modules specifically focuses on plumbing, carpentry, stitching, and candle making. Additionally, the organization also assists in the training and development with acquiring leadership skills and required resources to set up business. The organization believes in empowering people to be self-sustainable in the job market.


NABET India
Nabet is a social enterprise that loops in corporate sectors. Under their training and development modules, these corporate sectors offer industry-level training and subsequent employment to the youth falling under the differently abledspectrum. Their focus is on the booming telecommunication and IT sector where they can train and employ visually impaired and physically challenged people.

Government Initiatives
In India, youth hold a major population proportion, and this must be acknowledgedgiven the ability and extend they can support in transforming the economy by empowering them with proper guidance, training, infrastructure, opportunities, and motivation. With the right guidance, their interest, passion, sharp critical awareness, and skills of the contemporary world can pave way for them to play a critical role in significantly benefitting and transforming the country into a better place.
Uttar Pradesh – Deen Dayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushalya Yojana
The project offers training and placement opportunities to candidates in sewing machine job roles. The first batches of students are already live. The program expects to achieve the targets by 2022 end.
Chhattisgarh – NMDC Sponsored Skill Development
The project is funded under the CSR component of National Mineral Development Corporation. This project focuses on empowering the underprivileged youth with skill and training in industrial sewing machine operation, electrical appliances, and crafting. The development and training program ensures creation of a decent source of income through skill, training, and development and employment.
Integrated Skill Development Scheme
The project provides skill development to underprivileged adults as well as youth in apparels. Over 70% of the enrolments have got placed in various companies working as sewing machine operators across India.

Madhya Pradesh – Mukhya Mantri Kaushal Samvardhan Yojna
The project training and development center is located in Balaghat and Sheopur districts of Madhya Pradesh. The project offers training and job placement in sewing machine roles.

ONGC – Basic Computer Education programme
The ONGC-based basic computer course is of three months duration. The project beneficiaries include over 189 youth from underprivileged communities from slum colonies. The students were successfully trained and certified for job market. The project is sponsored by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd.
Skill development of women through Samajik Suvidha Kendra
Through Samajik Suvidha Kendra project, over 4000 women were trained and certified in different vocational domains such asclothing and apparels, culture, beauty, arts and craft, and basic computer knowledge. Women from the most vulnerable sections of the society, including those living below the poverty line, have been the primary beneficiaries of this program.


Skill development in beauty and culture for women
Sponsored by Container Corporation of India, this project is a skill development training program. In this program, women from SC/ST categories are enrolled for accreditation and job placement in beauty and culture job market.
Future Directions
Improvement in financial expenditure on vocational education and training. In the long run, Skill India will also not be enough if government financial expenditures in vocational education and training remain limited and if, therefore, the staff isn’t prepared well enough for imparting proper training.
