Improvement in financialexpenditure on vocational education and training
In the long run, Skill India will also not be enough if government financial expenditures in vocational education and training remain limited and if, therefore, the staff isn’t prepared well enough for imparting proper training.
Government allocation for school education (basic education) has declined from 2.8% of the budget in 2013-2014 to 2% in 2018-2019 which further adds to the alarming situation.
Evaluation of training institutes: Government and communities should also develop some methodology to evaluate the performance and outcome of these training platforms and provide feedback for improving their performance.
Skills survey: Surveys need to be conducted to find the accurate demand of the job-ready skills. This would assist policy makers and program designers in designing the training and development structures by making it more standardized through which the curriculum and training delivery materials can be disseminated efficiently.
India needs to develop a comprehensive model, learning from the technical and vocational training/education strategies used by Japan, Brazil, Germany, China, and Singapore. This would allow India to develop a rigorous model that would empower the youth acquire market-ready skills to satisfy the skill demand for employment.
Diversification in skills: Most of the government initiatives typically focus on contemporary vocational courses in trades such as beauty and art and sewing. However, it should be emphasized that with these courses would have limited implications in improving the conditions and livelihoods of the communities belonging to underprivileged societies. With the advent of technology, many, if not all, of these trades are automated. As a result, there is an urgent need for the government to look at upskilling the youth with the current job market demands.
